When PEGASO decided to win the DAKAR
PEGASO Egyptian, when PEGASO decided to compete in the RALLY DAKAR.
Today at Vallor Trucks we remember the EGYPTIAN PEGASUS ...
In 1984 Pegaso (ENASA) decided to compete in the “toughest rally in the world” at the controls of an Egyptian PEGASO 3046 Pegaso. This vehicle mounted a Pegaso 9100.42 engine with a displacement of 10170cc and developed 170 hp, most of these vehicles were used as forest fire trucks for companies such as Firmeas, Abenco, Pefipresa and Protec Fire. The robustness of these vehicles is such that many of them are still in service in multiple fire stations.
Returning to the Dakar Rally, in its sixth edition, this mythical Pegaso 3046/10, popularly known as the "Egyptian" and with hardly any modifications and driven by Carlos del Val and Miguel Guerrero, reaching an eighth place in its category and being one of the twelve trucks that finished the test that year, as a curious fact, at the end of the pilot refused to let the vehicle return to Spain by boat and decided to drive it back. This result led to the creation of an official team for the following years. Pegaso's strategy was to present trucks of less than 10 tons with engines that were around 200 HP, this gave them an advantage in rough terrain and complex areas.
For the 1985 season in Carlos del Val he won in the "Rally of the Pharaohs", the team had two PEGASO 3046 and 7222. For 1988 they showed the "Proto" or Pegaso 7223, which were developed on the basis of a Pegaso 7222. This new variant had the engine position modified on the rear axle and developed 225CV, with this change, the axle distribution was a 50 percent in each axis with what the set gained stability and traction capacity. It managed to “attack” obstacles and jumps with greater determination due to the unloading of the front axle, as a consequence of the lower forces it had to withstand. The transmission was also modified to 6 and interchangeable propeller shafts were added that sent 60 percent of the torque to the front axle and the remaining 40 to the rear. The cabin, not containing the engine, received a third crew member and supports were added to gain strength. In short, this Pegaso Proto was at a weight of 8500 Kg.
Finally, the Pegaso 7227 appeared as an evolution of the “Proto” with a 270Cv central engine to which an automatic gearbox was incorporated. Another curious fact is that the Pegasus "Egyptians" participated as assistance vehicles for other teams
